  • Luck saved travelers from June 2007 terror strike at Glasgow Airport

London, Oct.10 ANI: Luck played a huge and significant role in saving hundreds of travellers at Glasgow Airport in June 2007 from an attempted terror strike by Indian-born medics Dr. Bilal Abdullah and Dr. Kafeel Ahmed, investigators have told a jury here on Thursday.Islamist extremists tried to set off a suicide blast by driving a jeep into the main terminal building on the busiest day of the year, a jury heard. The vehicle, which was packed with gas canisters and fuel containers, caught fire but was stuck in the doors of the terminal and failed to explode. The Sun quoted prosecutor Jonathan Laidlaw , as saying: "It was simply luck that protected the people of Scotland." It was alleged Dr Bilal Abdulla, 29, a junior house doctor at the oyal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley, who lived in Houston, Renfrewshire, and Dr. Mohammed Asha, 27, were behind the attack hours after they botched two car bombs in London. "These two were intent on committing murder on an indiscriminate and wholesale scale," Laidlaw claimed. It was alleged that Kafeel Ahmed, who suffered fatal burns on the attack in Glasgow, was the third man in the terror cell. Laidlaw claimed the terrorists launched the airport attack on June 30 last year knowing they had only a limited time before they were caught following the failed London bombings.Laidlaw alleged that Abdulla, who was arrested at the airport, had been in the passenger seat and had sprayed petrol around the inside of the vehicle. He added: "Material found in their possession after their arrests reveals they both hold or adhere to extreme Islamic belief and that both share, despite their profession and their obligation to save life and avert suffering, the same extreme religious and murderous ideology as has inspired other terrorists who have struck and threatened this country in recent years."Abdulla and Asha deny conspiring to murder and to cause explosions likely to endanger life. The trial continues. ANI

  • Secret BBC script from 1970s for nuclear apocalypse announcement released

London, Oct 3 ANI: A top secret BBC script for an announcement to be broadcast if the UK came under nuclear attack in the early 1970s has been released from files in the National Archives in Kew, west London.According to a report by BBC News, the script has been in a file of documents kept secret for more than 30 years.Drawn up amid secret discussions between the Government and the BBC on how a new Wartime Broadcasting Service would operate in the event of a conflict involving the Soviet Union, the pre-recorded announcement is short on theatrics, with little to offer but a stiff upper lip.A terrified population were to be told simply to "stay calm and stay in your homes". The advice the population would have been offered was simple. Echoing public information leaflets available at the time, people were told to make the most of supplies of tinned food, save water and stay tuned to the BBC.News that British civilisation was facing its great ever threat was to be announced in a few crisp sentences like, "This is the Wartime Broadcasting Service. This country has been attacked with nuclear weapons. Communications have been severely disrupted, and the number of casualties and the extent of the damage are not yet known.""We shall bring you further information as soon as possible. Meanwhile, stay tuned to this wavelength, stay calm and stay in your own homes," it added. The horror of radioactive fall-out is spelt out in with the simple warning: "Remember there is nothing to be gained by running away.""Make sure gas and other fuel supplies are turned off and that all fires are extinguished," the public were then told. They were to use tap water, if it was still running, to fight any fires before filling buckets and containers to store supplies for drinking and cooking."Water must not be used for flushing lavatories: until you are told that lavatories may be used again, other toilet arrangements must be made," the announcement says, opting for the polite term.Without mention of nuclear shelters, people were to be advised to take cover in a "fall-out room" in the middle of their home, away from doors and windows. The script is contained in a file of documents kept secret for more than 30 years discussing arrangements for communicating with the public in the event of a nuclear war. • India's Premier's Tea enters North America

INT12International/BusinessIndia's Premier's Tea enters North AmericaToronto, Oct 2 IANS India's Premier's Tea, which claims to process the world's purest tea at its state-of-the-art facility, has entered the North American market. The Kolkata-based company will sell all its major brands - Darjeeling, Assam, Nilgiris and Kangra - in Canada, the US and Mexico through its Toronto-based Premier's Tea North America subsidiary.Launching the famous Indian brands here Wednesday, Premier's chairman Hasmukh Shah said: "We already sell in 26 countries. Now consumers in North America will get a taste of our 100 percent pure Darjeeling tea when so much fake tea is being sold under this world-famous brand."Though the Darjeeling brand is globally protected, almost 75 percent of the so-called Darjeeling tea sold worldwide is fake, he lamented. "India produces 8.75 million kg of Darjeeling tea, but 33 million kg fake tea is sold worldwide under this brand as dealers in many countries, including the UK, brand adulterated tea as Darjeeling tea," he said.Shah said Indian missions abroad were mounting an awareness campaign and initiating legal action to check faking of the Darjeeling brand. He said Premier's pure tea was set to capture more of the global market as people abandoned coffee for health reasons. "People in the West now realise that tea is very good for health as it has just 1.3 percent caffeine as compared to 14.1 percent in coffee. Plus, tea is a great anti-oxidant," he said.Claiming that Premier's Tea was the purest in the world, Shah said: "All our brands are the purest as our tea is put through an eight-step cleaning process at the world's best plant - the only one outside Japan - in Kolkata."Premier's Tea North America chairman Martin Dorie said: "North Americans will now enjoy a pure, unadulterated cup of Indian black or green or organic tea... the finest cup you have ever tasted from the tea gardens of India." Premier's Tea North America president Robert Hebert said: "Till now, what you have been drinking is a blend of low quality teas. Now you will get our 100 percent pure Darjeeling and other brands."A convert to Hinduism, Herbert said tea was fast replacing coffee in North America. "Already, 330 million people in the age group of 16 to 65 drink tea. The numbers will rise fast as people get access to pure teas. We are beginning with two containers and I am sure we will soon sell a lot more," he said.--Indo-Asian News Servicegs/sh/dg 463 Words02101000

As part of the company's 10th anniversary celebrations, Project 10 to the 100th asks people to submit ideas in seven categories to the project's website, www.project10tothe100.com. "Never in history have so many people had so much information, so many tools at their disposal, so many ways of making good ideas come to life," said an announcement Thursday on the website. "Yet at the same time, so many people, of all walks of life, could use so much help, in both little ways and big." The competition is open to anyone. The seven categories include sustainable energy use, environment, health, education, shelter, encouraging communities, and building opportunities to help people better provide for themselves and their families. An eighth category is simply titled "everything else". Ideas can be submitted through a form available on the website, which poses questions including, "If your idea were to become a reality, who would benefit the most and how" and "Describe the optimal outcome should your idea be selected and successfully implemented". A panel of independent judges will choose the best ideas and divide the prize money equally among the winners. The website says that Google is looking for simple ideas that will help large numbers of people, especially those with urgent needs.Among the products cited on the website is the Hippo Water Roller, a 90-liter container that holds water and can be easily rolled on the ground with a handle, taking some of the burden off people in areas where clean water is scarce, such as parts of Africa.--DPAsnb311 Words26090651

NAT32National/Law/Politics/CrimeGodhra tragedy pre-planned, probe panel finds LeadAhmedabad, Sep 25 IANS The burning of a coach of the Sabarmati Express at Godhra in February 2002, which claimed 59 lives and triggered Gujarat-wide communal violence, was pre-planned, the Nanavati inquiry panel has concluded. The first 200-page part of the report prepared by the panel headed by Justice retd G.T. Nanavati, which was tabled in the assembly Thursday amid high drama, has virtually given a clean chit to Chief Minister Narendra Modi, saying there was no evidence to incriminate him or any member of his cabinet in the ensuing violence.Fifty-nine people, including 25 women and 15 children, were burnt alive in the S-6 coach when a violent mob set ablaze two coaches of the Sabarmati Express at the Godhra railway station on Feb 27. Many of them were Vishwa Hindu Parishad VHP activists returning after a campaign in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh. As Minister of State for Home Amit Shah tabled the report on the first day of the three-day monsoon session of the assembly, it created a furore with the opposition Congress crying foul and walking out.The gruesome tragedy led to communal violence across the state for week in which 1,169 people, a majority of them Muslims, were killed. The report said that 140 litres of petrol was purchased as part of the conspiracy to burn the bogey. It added that the conspiracy was hatched by Moulvi Umarji at the Aman Guest House in Godhra, about 140 km from here, and was meant to spread terror in the area. The report states that the train-burning was a pre-meditated act and there was also heavy stone throwing for 10 to 20 minutes at the S-6 and S-7 coaches followed by the burning that prevented people from coming out. It notes that Razak Kurkur and Salim Panwala had purchased 140 litres of petrol on Feb 26 and carried them in containers. Shaukat Lalu, Imran Sheri, Rafiq, Salim Zarda, Zabeer and Siraj Bala were also involved in the burning of the train, the report says. The two-member inquiry commission was set up by the state government in march 2002. One of the members, Justice retd K.G. Shah expired earlier this year, and the government appointed Justice retd Akshay Mehta in his place. The findings of the commission contradicts findings of another panel headed by Justice retd U.C. Banerjee, set up by Railways Minister Lalu Prasad, which unequivocally stated that the fire was accidental and there was no evidence to suggest that it was planned.--Indo-Asian News Servicevnb-mk/am/dg451 Words*25091650
